Speedy School Supplies in Brisbane ran a workshop based on some of the books and theme. Some items on display were a set of cushions spelling out READ, cats made with plasticine and rolled flat for Andy Griffith's The Cat on the Mat is Flat, and a sculpture of the tadpole like creature from Shaun Tan's The Arrival. This creature was made using a balloon, bits of cardboard, wire and Plaster Wrap (Modroc) - Plaster impregnated cotton guaze used for modelling. Cut and dip strips in warm water, squeeze out excess then layer over wire armatures, body parts (not recommended for the face). When dry, it can be sanded and painted with acrylic or tempera paint, then sealed.
This product was also used at antoher workshop in Ipswich run by Primary Arts Network where we made a machine from bits and pieces of recycled objects, covered it in Modroc and painted it. We had to guess what each others machine were intended for.
