The Mirror ProjectThe Mirror Project opening day

Following our successful 150 Views of Ipswich Exhibition last year, Primary Arts Network Ipswich and the Ipswich District Teacher-Librarian Network decided to collaborate once again to provide an exciting opportunity for children and young people to engage in The Arts and Literature in 2011.

Coinciding with the Ipswich Festival of Children’s Literature  the Ipswich Art Gallery set up an exhibition of much loved children’s author and illustrator Jeannie Baker based on her book Mirror.  Winner of the 2011 Children’s Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year Award, Mirror is a visual text comprised of two parts that are read simultaneously. The images reveal the story of two boys and their families, one from Sydney and the other a remote village in Morocco.  As the two stories unfold it is evident that although we are different we are the same … we are the mirror of each other.

This beautiful book is created in the renowned style of Jeannie Baker - object or 3D collage.

We invited students to create works in this style that depict everyday narratives from their lives as well as a comparative narrative of another culture … just like the book.  An exhibition of the students’ art work One World Many Stories: The Mirror Project was open at the Ipswich Community Gallery from 3rd until 14th September.
